Philip and Sarah Martin

Philip Martin was an African American; his wife Sarah was a Native American. They had seven children born in Waterbury between 1792 and 1810: Grove, their eldest son; Andrew, born in 1794; Luna, born in 1796; Silvester, born in 1798; Briant, born in 1800; Hannah Isabella, born in 1804; and Betsey Julia, born in 1810. Their births were recorded with the town clerk. The Waterbury tax lists for 1800 show that Philip Martin owned a small piece of land.

By the 1820 census, Sarah Martin was a widow living in Waterbury with six of her children.
