Waterbury's Slave Owners

Waterbury slave owners in the 18th century, numbering half a dozen at any one time, were affluent and often active in the leadership of the town’s churches. Some were professionals, doctors, lawyers and ministers, and would have relied on their slaves to help operate their farms and run their households.

The names of the slave owners have been identified through historical accounts, estate inventories, census records and vital statistics.
